Project Overview

ATEB Cleaning Services was contacted by an HVAC contractor overseeing refrigeration repairs and inspection work at a Dollar General location in Jaffrey, New Hampshire.

The situation was urgent:

  • the existing cleaning vendor had refused to complete the job
  • refrigeration units were not prepared for inspection and repair
  • multiple contractors were dependent on the cleaning completion to proceed

Without immediate resolution, the project timeline was at risk.

ATEB was mobilized the same day to stabilize the situation and restore progress.

The Challenge

Active Environment and Contractor Dependency

The project required execution within an active retail environment {Link to /industries/retail-showrooms/} while supporting multiple dependent operations.

Scope included:

  • 39 commercial refrigeration units
  • units remained stocked with product
  • work performed alongside ongoing contractor activity

This created operational challenges:

  • removal and handling of stored food within active units
  • coordination with HVAC and retail service teams
  • limited time window to complete cleaning without delaying repairs
  • equipment sensitivity requiring controlled cleaning methods
  • continuous store operations during execution

The challenge was not simply cleaning the units.
It was preparing them in a way that allowed all other contractors to proceed without disruption.

Operational Constraint: Time-Sensitive Execution in Active Store Conditions

Cleaning had to be completed without interrupting store operations or delaying contractor work.

Key constraints included:

  • active retail environment
  • time-sensitive execution tied to contractor schedules
  • equipment sensitivity requiring controlled methods
  • incomplete scope due to prior vendor failure
  • external factors, such as weather, affecting component handling

Execution required real-time adjustments and continuous coordination.

Our Approach

To maintain control under time constraints, ATEB implemented a structured, phased approach.

1. Controlled Removal and Preparation

  • safely removed stored products from each unit
  • disassembled shelving and internal components
  • prepared units for full internal access

2. Cleaning and Contamination Removal

  • addressed surface debris and embedded residue
  • applied appropriate cleaning methods based on equipment condition
  • avoided excessive moisture or pressure to protect components

3. Equipment-Aware Execution

  • adjusted cleaning methods based on refrigeration system sensitivity
  • ensured no damage to internal components
  • balanced effective cleaning with equipment protection

4. Reassembly and Readiness

  • reinstalled shelving and internal components
  • ensured units were clean and organized
  • prepared units for inspection and repair

5. Coordination Model: Multi-Contractor Execution

This project required continuous coordination across multiple parties:

  • HVAC contractor performing inspections and repairs
  • retail service team responsible for product labeling and organization

Cleaning was a critical dependency.

Without properly prepared refrigeration units:

  • inspection could not proceed
  • repairs would be delayed
  • the overall project timeline would be impacted

6. Scope Expansion and Risk Identification

During execution, an additional refrigeration unit in the store’s expired inventory area was identified as:

  • heavily contaminated
  • showing visible residue and buildup requiring sanitation attention

Although outside the original scope, the unit was cleaned to prevent:

  • future sanitation risks
  • potential inspection issues

Results: Project Timeline Stabilized

ATEB completed the cleaning of all 39 commercial refrigeration units, allowing the HVAC contractor to proceed with inspections and repairs.

The retail service team was able to complete product reorganization, and the coordinated cleaning effort helped stabilize the overall project timeline.

During execution, ATEB also identified and cleaned an additional refrigeration unit outside the original scope, addressing a sanitation concern before the project concluded.

Why This Matters

Commercial refrigeration cleaning in active retail environments is not a fixed-scope task.

This case demonstrates:

  • the ability to step into incomplete or failed scopes
  • the importance of understanding equipment sensitivity
  • the need for coordination across multiple contractors
  • the role of cleaning in enabling downstream operations

In these environments, cleaning is not an isolated service.
It is a project-critical function.

Time-sensitive projects in active environments require more than standard cleaning.

They require structured execution, coordination, and the ability to adapt in real time.

ATEB Cleaning Services delivers cleaning as an operational function that supports broader project success.
